National Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts of Armenia "Astgik" (Armenia)

General Information:

National Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts of Armenia “Astgik” was founded in 1996. NAGGGS “Astgik” is member of World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.

The aim of the NAGGGS "Astgik":

To support the development of the spiritual, intellectual, physical and social potential of girls and young women as individuals and as responsible citizens of their country in always changing world. NAGGGS "Astgik" consist of more than 1000 members and has 9 branches in 11 Marzes (districts) of Armenia: Yerevan, Kotayk, Armavir, Gegarqunik, Shirak, Lori, Sunik, Ararat, Vayoc-Dzor.

Areas of activity:

The work of National Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts of Armenia "Astgik" is carried out in following directions:

  • weekly meetings with the Girl Guides, which are held according to the specially developed

  • educational programs of organization;

  • conducting of trainings and seminars for the adult leaders of organisation;

  • organization of the camps, trips, hikes;

  • participation in various guide events on the international level;

  • participation in youth seminars, forums, festivals, which promote formation of the international and national youth policy;

  • participation in the programs and projects connected to improvement of a situation of children and women in Armenia.

Programme:

During the establishment of the Association of Armenian Guides the three main age branches were defined: Artswikner (6-10 years), Arenushner (11-15 years) and Parmanuhiner (16-20 years).

The above programme helps develop the girls and meet their needs of all areas.

Scope is given for flexibility and individual principles of the Movement and is the best method of getting aims. Besides the main nine point program of the Association related to the needs of Armenian society. The Association also carried out such long -term program as "A healthy spirit in Healthy Body", “Peace of Caucasus by the hand of women”. In some regions the brunches of Association have project supporting disabled children. The idea of such projects is to run small events, concerts, celebrations for such children and to help them to communicate with their able-bodied peers. Another priority of the program is the ecological aspect and some special projects have supplemented this. One of the examples is a program "We and Nature", which carried out the communication with the Nature, planting of the threes and so on. Another area of the Association's activities is cultural level of girls and their attitude to National heritage.   

Training Courses and Seminars:

In the Association there are special teams of trainers, which are responsible for the training policy of the Association. The trainers of this team have participated in the training for trainers. There is a team of trainers and Training Commissioner.

All leaders undergo basic leader training. The Association offers training in special skills (management, spiritual dimensions, first aid etc.) as far as is possible and appropriate representatives of the Association carry out many regional and international Training Courses and Seminars.

Relation to society:

NAGGGS "Astgik" also cooperates with different youth organizations. On a local level there is also cooperation with a wide rang of organizations including these focusing on ecological culture and youth issues. The co-operation with all these organizations includes different areas of work, joint projects, and participation in camps, trainings and also in some joint events.

NAGGGS “Astgik” is a member of World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.

Social Union of Sumgait Youth

General Information:

The Social Union of Sumgait Youth is a local and regional non-governmental/non-profit organisation established on May 28, 2000 in Sumgait. 

The major objectives of the organisation:

  • To protect and assist in the realisation of social, political, economic political and cultural rights and freedoms of youth living in the city of Sumgait. 

  • To carry out education on Human Rights and democracy among diverse strata of population in Sumgait City through national an international programmes

  • To encourage the participation of young people in civil society building

  • To establish new platforms for youth to express themselves

Accomplishments:

  • “Anti-drug Education” – seminars, ISAR/Azerbaijan; Sumgait, Azerbaijan

  • “Drug-addiction: a path leading to abyss” – scientific conference; Sumgait, Azerbaijan

  • “Human Rights Education for Secondary School Teachers” – seminars; British Embassy, Sumgait, Azerbaijan

  • “Creating a Commission within the Municipality to deal with Problems of Disabled People” – roundtable discussion, booklets, ISAR/Azerbaijan; Sumgait, Azerbaijan

  • “Multimedia NGO Support Centre” – miscellaneous services, directories, producing TV programs to reflect upon NGOs’ activities; The National Endowment for Democracy (NED); Sumgait, Azerbaijan

  • “Free Legal Support Centre”  - rendering free legal assistance for vulnerable part of the public in Sumgait. Soros Foundation/Open Society Institute

  • “Human Rights Education for Underage Girls” – seminars, publication of booklets and bulletins, essay-writing-contest.

  • “Civil Society Development: Legal Education of the local NGOs” –publication/Westminster Foundation for Democracy

Since March 2002, the organisation has initiated a new Multimedia NGO Support programme with the funding of the National Endowment for Democracy in the city of Sumgait.

The programme is principally aimed at:

  • Providing NGOs in regions outside of the capital with the technical means to work effectively;

  • Strengthening NGOs by providing the opportunity to communicate and network with similar organisations within Azerbaijani and internationally;

  • Identifying and enhancing the capabilities of the next generation of leaders in the non-governmental sector;

  • Strengthening the capacity of already-existing and newly-formed regional NGOs;

  • Promoting the formation of new NGOs;

  • Assisting NGO's in interacting with the public;
