WDEE Kick-off conference Kőszeg 23-29 September 2009

Koszeg

Where Does Europe End project has started it’s first conference right after the hot summer of 2009. The starting point was in a small city in Hungary, Kőszeg where AEGEE-Pécs have very good connections. Due to this we had a high quality, three star hotel with plenty of food and nice atmosphere. The participants were well selected and motivated to contribute to the success plan of WDEE for the future, as the conference served as an input for us. It was kind of an experiment event, as we needed useful and competitive input to our ideas to make the most out of the first intentions of the project. Together with the great participants we managed to build up together the strategical plan of WDEE including future events and their topics and development of street action’s implementation. As WDEE it’s based on people’s perception of Europe (fisical and mental borders) we are focused on survey making in different representative parts of Europe as part of the project's overall concept is having events in geographically and culturally distinct locations within Europe in order to detect the different concepts of it.

The team

Due to this in each country where we are going, we make our surveys with local people in order to find out their answers which are served to open up our perception of Europe. In Hungary there were three locations, the city of Kőszeg and Budapest and the university of Szombathely. In addition to the important street actions we had workshops as well held by WDEE team members and also by guest speakers named Dushana Zdravkova former EPM of Bulgaria and Rina Tsubaki the manager of European Journalism Center.

WDEE Turkey and EU Integration Izmir 15-22 May 2010

WS Izmir

The second event of WDEE took part in Turkey as nowadays this venue have been chosen according to the fact that Turkey as a candidate for EU membership is currently in a complex and difficult harmonisation process, and the topic of the conference, European integration have been controversially debated here with participants from all over Europe. After the most important aims of WDEE (street action interviews) a second emphasis put on the specific thematic focus of the event: “European Integration – Common Sense?”.This topic was dealt within workshops, lectures, excursions, and discussion rounds with special attention to the core points of the European Council Presidency's agenda.

Due to YiA grant what we managed to win again after hard work on it with our valuable helpers and WDEE FR team, we stayed again in a marvellous place in Cesme (4 star hotel), which is the holiday resort of Izmir. We wanted to represent the problematic points of this topic so we tried to invite speakers who represented or impartially or criticly the main theme, as this workshop title shows Different vision of European Integration in the future.

Beach Turkey

This time we did street action in a university in Izmir and a shopping center, than next day also in a rural area of Sirince and Cesme. We found a lot of motivated people who although didn’t really know a lot about the topic and the questions regarding their europeaness, but they became very happy to meet foreign students interested in their opinion. It was a unique experience to get in contact with so friendly and hospitable people who are opened for newcomers and glad to share their culture with them. Both for WDEE team members as for the participants it was a special experience which was not so specific in the case of Hungary.
