"As I scrutinize Siena’s ancient buildings, timeless dwellings where I would love to live one day with a window of my own overlooking the clay tiles and the green shutters, I try vainly to understand wherein lies the secret that Siena whispers and rings on and on in my ears as long as I shall live.” (José Saramago)

Val D'Orcia

The pause in this crossing that I hold dearest, the stop that my spirit desires with fits of impatience and greediness – is that in the high Orcia valley, beyond San Quirico, in the lands reaching to Montepulciano and Pienza. Its vision appears as the seabed of the memory or a land of dreams where some mysterious exalted sense perceives the chill of an unexplainable wind.

...This is an example of the fruitful union of the classical Greek “fusis”and”sofos” of nature and logic. Their marriage has given rise to a sort of divinity: the nymph of the Chianti...

It was made famous by Brunello, one of the world’s best red wines. But Montalcino is also a magnificent city of art which, from its hill, dominates the 3000 hectares of vineyards (1500 for Brunello) that have given it fame and wealth.

Already the ancient Roman city with the name Florentia, was in the Middle Ages an important cultural center, commercial, economic and financial, to become in the Modern Capital of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany under the rule of the Medici family and later, from 1865 to 1871 , the capital of Italy.
