Bulgaria: Lost in Time and Space

Organized by AEGEE-Sofia

Bulgaria: Lost in Time and Space Profile Picture
A legend goes about the time when God was giving away different parts of the world to different nations. All of them showed up on time and got the respected share of land – a place to call their own, their home. But the Bulgarians were busy, there were crops to gather and food to be stored for the winter, so they were late to appear before God. By this time no land was left to give. God looked down on the tired, lonely people, took pity on them and decided to give them the only thing that was left – a piece of Paradise.
It is true, this legend, as far as Bulgarians are concerned. The land of Bulgaria is astonishingly beautiful, so beautiful that no words, not in any Earth language can describe it. It can only be felt, it can only be experienced with all senses. From the bright golden domes of the Aleksander Nevski Cathedral to the sunny meadows of the Rhodope Mountain, everything is perfect. The only question is – do you feel the need to experience Heaven?
If your answer is yes, then get yourself equipped with tickets, some clothes, smiles and good mood. You are about to embark on an adventure of a lifetime, see some sunrises after late nights, meet some sunny people, exchange smiles, feel the breeze of the Black Sea on your skin and take a little Bulgarian spirit when you return home.

Sofia

This is the second largest capital in the Balkans and the second oldest capital in Europe. The broad streets of the center, covered by shining yellow pavement, will lead you to the marvelous sights of the city, most prominent of which is the Aleksander Nevski Cathedral. It is truly a remarkable experience to stand at the steps of the biggest Orthodox church in this part of Europe or to walk around and perceive the historical buildings and how they are integrated into the new look of the city. Hidden behind the great Vitosha mountain (“the tallest mountain in the world” according to the native city inhabitants), the city of the old and new awaits you. It is only here where you can fully understand the connection between the antique and modern. Bursting with life and energy, always awake, it is not only old, but so so new, true to its motto - “It grows but does not age.”

Rila Monastery

The monastery is a hidden treasure protected by the mountain. It is small and white and surrounded by old trees. The sacred, the secret, the minuscule inside the massive. This is the monastery, build by one of the most prominent saints in Orthodox Christianity – Saint John of Rila. He chose this place for a reason – so remote and so magnificent, the only true location to properly worship God. You should see for yourselves how a mountain could appear both distant and close, both small and enormous, both frightening and friendly. Come and perceive the spirit of Rila!

Plovdiv

The history, the present, the emotion, the sunny weather. The city of Plovdiv is rated third among Europe’s Best Destinations for 2016, the European Capital Of Culture for 2019, the longest pedestrian zone in Europe, the cultural center of many civilizations – Thracian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Turk – with a major role in Bulgarian Renaissance. The pearl of the city is the remarkably well preserved Ancient Roman Theatre, which dates from the second century AD. It is one of the best maintained antique buildings in Europe and it truly saves the spirit of the metropolis over the years. Ancient and timeless, Plovdiv converges antiquity and modernity with an abundance of sunny weather, delightful sights from the surrounding hills, singing fountains in the starry night and many smiling people. Because Plovdiv is in fact pLOVEdiv!

Rhodope Mountains

To better understand the mountains, you need to come prepared. You need lots of enthusiasm and devotion. The Rhodope Mountains are a mystical place and home to legends. These mountains had once listened to the melodies, born from the talent of the best musician who ever lived – Orpheus. So beautiful his music was, that not only men, but also beasts were fascinated by his tunes. Here lies also the hidden gate to the underworld where he descended to try to save his wife Eurydice from the God of the Dead himself. The legend for the Thracian man with a striking musical talent could still be felt in the sunlit meadows of the mountain. It is an experience to lose yourself to among the trees to hide from the world and emerge at the end purified and clean.

Sunny Beach

Last but not least, the party! This is the most famous beach resort of Bulgaria, visited by millions of tourists every summer. Sunny Beach never sleeps, with the music of disco clubs and bars echoing into the night. The lights of the hotels reflects on the crystal clear water of the Black Sea and the streets are bustling with life. During the day the beaches turn to the perfect place to start new acquaintances or just play some beach volleyball under the warm sunlight. It is the perfect ending of the perfect SUmmer experience!
