“Human Rights and the European Identity” is an international youth training organized at the European level by the Human Rights Working Group HRWG of AEGEE Europe (Association des Etats Generaux des Etudiants Europeens) and AEGEE – Iasi.

The Human Rights Working Group (HRWG) represents the conscience of AEGEE (one of Europe's largest interdisciplinary student associations) and its main aim is to bring human rights violations into public notice and to raise awareness of violations of human dignity.

It was felt that the annual Human Rights Working Group activity plan would be the perfect platform for the launching a European-wide Action Week against Racism. This Action Week coincides with the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Discrimination, on March 21, and it represents a coordinated campaign at the European level in order to combat all types of discriminations.

The main event of this Action Week is the international training “Human Rights and the European Identity”, organized by AEGEE-Iasi between 21 – 28th of March 2004. This is a week-long training seminar, in the mould of the “European School” events successfully held by AEGEE-Europe, on topics such as Public Relations, Diplomacy and Fund-Raising. AEGEE-Iasi has as partners for this project the European Law Students Association and United against Racism.

This event is meant to continue the AEGEE’s tradition of training and motivating young students to work on a priority topic (in this case Human Rights), in which we desire members to get involved more actively.

The event represents an original project, combining all necessary ingredients for a successful Human Rights seminar, for beginners in the area as well as for the students/young practitioners who desire to have more practical knowledge in the field:

  1. Five theoretical training sessions (e.g. “Human Rights: definition, history, philosophy, basic rights, developments”, “The main systems for the protection of Human Rights – universal and regional”, “The functioning mechanism of the European Court of Human Rights”, “The situation of the Roma minority: origins, history, main issues, discriminations”, “The affirmative action in Europe”, “The impact of Human rights issues in the diplomatic relations”, etc.)

  2. Practical aspects: Officials, such as from the City Hall or the Police, will be invited, to present a particular subject, which could be: the situation of the Roma communities/discrimination nowadays, discrimination of the homosexuals, the fight against Human Trafficking, etc. The willing participants will be also invited to submit their papers. The papers will be selected and the best of them will be presented by their authors to the other participants. Simulation games will also be used as a tool for added effectiveness, while participants will also enjoy visits to local institutions.

  3. In the closing open call Conference of the event, besides the training participants and trainers, between 150 and 200 Romanian university students from Law, Political Science and History and Economical Sciences faculties are also expected to attend.

  4. Cultural communication will be a strength point at this event, by bringing together youth from all Council of Europe countries, and providing them with a chance for intercultural learning, not only by following the same courses and seminars, but also sharing different mentalities and cultures.

At the end of this seminar we expect that the notions “Human Rights” and “discrimination” will not remain abstract and senseless, but vivid: rising in the participants’ conscience new perspectives, challenges and meanings.
