General information on Romania

Romania is located in the center of the European continent, having as neighbors Hungary in the west, Yugoslavia in the south-west and Bulgaria in south, Ukraine in north and the Moldavian Republic and the Black Sea in the east.

It is situated between 43°37'07" and 48°15'06" latitude north and 20°15'44" and 29°41'24" longitude east. It is also crossed by the 45th parallel at 70 km north of Bucharest and the 25th meridian at 90 km west of Bucharest.

It has a population of about 22 million inhabitants on a surface of 240.000 km2. Romania is the 13-th in surface in and the 10-th in population.

The main cities are : Bucharest : 2,060,551 inhabitants , Constanta : 348,575 , Iasi : 339,728 , Timisoara : 327,830 , Galati : 326,728 , Cluj-Napoca : 326,017 , Brasov : 324,210 , Craiova : 306,825.

Romania is divided into tree major regions: Transylvania in the West, Muntenia in the South and Moldova in the North-East.

The city of Iasi is located in the north-eastern Romania, being considered the cultural capital of Moldova. It is one of the oldest cities of the country, in present being inhabited by approximate 350.000 people.

The climate is temperate, with Mediterranean influences in the east.

The air transportation is assured by the TAROM Company which provides connections between Bucharest and the main European cities. The landing is on the international airport Bucharest - Otopeni.

In order to get to Romania by coach, you can make reservations at ATLASSIB. There are multiple connexions between Bucharest, Iasi and the European cities. You can take the buses from Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Greece, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Sweden, Czech.

Most of the buses stop/go from Bucharest at Rahova Station and in Iasi at the West bus station...

By train, there are 5 major train connexions

Bucharest - Iasi

Between Iasi and Bucharest there are approximately 400 km, the trip would last about 1 hour by plane, 6 hours by car or bus and 7 hours by train.

There are two daily flights from Bucharest to Iasi (www.tarom.ro).

The buses are leaving from Bucharest at the Double T Station (Piata Unirii)

There are also small buses leaving from the North Railway station of Bucharest

There are 6 trains – 2 in the morning, one at noon, 2 in the afternoon and a night train, leaving from the North Railway station Gr.A to Iasi. For details of the schedule and reservations go to the site www.cfr.ro
