The Signification of the event

The UN International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on 21 March.

On 21 March 1960, in the township of Sharpeville, South Africa (near Johannesburg) Black South Africans were peacefully demonstrating against apartheid's "pass laws". Commonly known as the Pass Laws, this ironically named act forced black people to carry identification with them at all times, to prove they had permission to travel in white areas. No black person could leave a rural area for an urban one without a permit from the local authorities.

The White police force opened fire on the defenseless men, women, and children, killing 69 people and wounding over 180 of them.

By its Resolution no. 2142 from 26th of October 1966, The United Nations General Assembly subsequently declared 21 March as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

On this occasion the UN General Assembly called on the international community not only to commemorate that tragedy, but also to intensify its efforts in order to combat racism and discrimination wherever they exist.

The program will soon be available.
